Hamilton’s Nurse Residency Program is designed to assist in the transition from nursing school to professional practice with a focus on building critical thinking and professional practice skills.
Goals of the Nurse Residency Program are:
Build New Graduate Competence by:
- Bridging gaps in residents’ clinical skill set by strengthening general clinical skills and establishing a consistent shared knowledge base
- Connecting “book knowledge” to real-life clinical challenges by using critical thinking, case study analysis, and reflective practice
Create Emotional Support by:
- Ensuring ongoing support from leadership and peers by offering structured guidance, regular opportunities to express emotions, and encourage peer support networks
- Fostering a feeling of pride, fellowship, and common loyalty among the resident class
Promote Professional Involvement by:
- Broadening the understanding of healthcare delivery
- Empowering residents to contribute to practice improvement by completing a professional development project during the program which will equip residents with critical thinking, research, and presentation skills, preparing residents to conquer future practice improvement initiatives
- Sparking continuous professional growth and development by engaging new graduates in professional development planning and providing opportunities for continued education

How often do you offer the Nurse Residency Program?
The Nurse Residency is offered once a year starting in August. Residents will be accepted three months into the start of the program
Who is eligible for the Nurse Residency Program?
This is one of the features that make Hamilton’s Nurse Residency Different. Any new graduate registered nurse, with less than six months of experience, is placed in the Nurse Residency Program. There is no application process OR any contract to sign.
How long is the Nurse Residency Program?
The Nurse Residency Program meets once a month for ten months.
If I have experience as a nurse, will I need to participate in the Nurse Residency Program?
Only new nurses with less than 6 months of experience participate in the Nurse Residency Program.
What if I haven’t taken the NCLEX or do not yet have my results? Can I still be hired into the Nurse Residency Program?
Residents that can provide official documentation of successful NCLEX results and pending application for GA RN licensure (or a state that is part of the enhanced nurse licensure compact) will be considered eligible to start program.
What if I have taken NCLEX but did not pass?
RN licensure is required before the start of the program.
When should I start the application process at Hamilton Medical Center?
You can apply at any time. Once you have graduate from your nursing program, you will be hired in as a NGRN-NT. If you are graduating in December it is recommended that you start applying in September. If you are graduating in May it is recommended to start applying in March.
