• If patient is confirmed or suspected of having COVID-19, 1 visitor will be permitted for the duration of the Emergency Department stay.
• Children under the age of 12 will not be permitted to visit the hospital.

What to expect:We understand that a visit to the emergency department can sometimes be frustrating and even frightening, especially when you do not know what to expect. We have prepared this information to address some of your concerns.
For urgent but not life-threatening conditions, you can also visit one of Hamilton’s Convenient Care locations that offer flexible hours to fit your schedule.
How do you determine who goes back first?
Upon entering the Emergency Department, you go through a process called “triage”. In most cases, a nurse will assess your symptoms and check your vital signs to determine the severity of your condition. The Emergency Department does not work on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Patients who are classified as critically ill will be taken back and seen by a physician faster than patients with less critical conditions, which ensures better outcomes for all patients.
What can I expect after I’m taken back?
You will be brought to an examination area, where you will be examined by an emergency department provider. Depending on the situation, the doctor may order tests (such as X-rays, blood work, EKG), and your vital signs will be monitored. Nurses and other assistants will work with the physician to coordinate your care.
If your condition is critical, you may be admitted or transferred to another hospital. Otherwise, the emergency physician will discuss your diagnosis with you and your treatment plan, which may include medications, medical restrictions, and possible follow-up care. After your questions are answered, and you complete your discharge paperwork, you will be discharged from the hospital.
Financial Arrangements
You should discuss emergency department visits with your employer or private insurance carrier to determine your insurance coverage. All charges not covered by insurance are your responsibility to pay. Personal checks, many types of insurance, VISA, Mastercard, and Discover cards are accepted.
Billing
Your hospital bill includes hospital charges only. You will receive separate bills from the Emergency Department Physician, anesthesiologist, pathologist (if tissue samples are examined), and/or radiologist (if X-rays are taken), if their services are needed.
