Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a painless, safe, and effective medical treatment that uses pressurized oxygen to promote healing of wounds. The patient rests comfortably in a clear acrylic chamber while breathing 100 percent oxygen at pressures two to three times greater than the atmosphere’s normal pressure.
The purpose of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy therapy is to increase the oxygen supply to the wound. This increased oxygen promotes the formation of new blood vessels, preserves damaged tissues, prevents edema, and helps to control infection.
Patients most likely to benefit for hyperbaric medicine are those who are struggling with:
- Diabetic ulcers of the lower extremities
- Chronic bone infections
- Compromised skin flap or grafts
- Injuries related to radiation treatment
A typical Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy treatment regimen will consist of 30 to 40 individual treatments, although that number may vary based on each patient’s condition and their response to the treatment. Each treatment typically lasts about 2 hours and is administered once daily, five days a week.
During the treatment, the patient will be in a clear, see through chamber that allows for freedom of movement. Most patients watch TV, listen to music or nap during the treatment.
