Groundbreaking Cancer Research Now Available Locally
Peeples Cancer Institute (PCI) at Hamilton Medical Center has expanded access to the latest in cancer research by offering National Cancer Institute (NCI) supported Phase 3 clinical trials right here in Dalton. This means patients in north Georgia and the surrounding area no longer need to travel to major cities to access cutting-edge cancer treatments.

What Are Clinical Trials?
Clinical trials are research studies that explore new ways to prevent, detect, or treat diseases. For cancer patients, they offer hope beyond standard treatment options.
Clinical trials are conducted in phases:
- Phase 1 and 2 trials test safety and side effects of new treatments with a small number of participants
- Phase 3 trials further explore the effectiveness of promising treatments, involving multiple sites and potentially thousands of patients
Phase 3 trials are typically only offered at larger universities and hospitals, making PCI’s program a rare and valuable resource for our community.
Why Choose PCI for Clinical Trials?
- Local Access to Advanced Care: The next closest site to access these trials is Emory in Atlanta, saving our patients considerable travel time during an already challenging period
- Expert Oversight: Our trials are conducted in collaboration with Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University
- Highly Qualified Team: Dr. Arif Ali, PCI Medical Director and former Emory faculty member, completed specialized training to administer these trials
- Insurance Coverage: As approved Phase 3 clinical trials, these treatments are typically covered by insurance
“Clinical trials are an opportunity to advance science and provide new and better ways to treat patients. They offer hope beyond what might be possible with only standard of care.”
— Jayme Carrico, PCI Executive Director
Current and Upcoming Trials
Our latest clinical trial evaluates the addition of high-dose targeted radiation to the usual treatment for locally advanced, inoperable, non-small cell lung cancer.
PCI expects to soon open additional clinical trials for:
