DALTON, Ga. (December 11, 2025) – With the flu season arrival, Hamilton Medical Center is urging residents to take simple, effective steps to protect themselves, their families and the community from influenza.
“Each year, the flu leads to thousands of preventable illnesses,” said Andrea Cromer, Infection Prevention director. “By taking some proactive measures, we can significantly reduce the spread of the virus and keep those in our community healthy.”

Key flu prevention measures include:
• Seasonal flu shot – The annual flu vaccine remains an effective way to prevent influenza and reduce the severity of illness. Health officials recommend that everyone age 6 months and older receive a flu shot each year.
• Wash hands frequently – Regular handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds helps remove germs that can spread the flu. When soap and water are unavailable, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer is a useful alternative.
• Cover coughs and sneezes – Covering coughs and sneezes with an elbow or a tissue is an effective prevention measure. Used tissues should be thrown away immediately, followed by handwashing.
• Stay home when sick – Anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms – such as fever, cough, sore throat or fatigue – should stay home to avoid passing on the virus to others.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces – Door handles, light switches, mobile devices and other high-touch surfaces should be cleaned regularly during flu season.
• Maintain healthy daily habits – Adequate sleep, balanced nutrition, physical activity and stress management help support a strong immune system.
Flu vaccines are available at Hamilton Primary Care locations (by appointment) or Hamilton Walk-In Clinics.
“All of us can play a part in minimizing flu activity,” said Cromer. “A few small actions can make a big difference.”
