Lymphedema is an increase in swelling that typically occurs in an arm or leg but can also happen in your head, neck, or other parts of your body. It is often caused by a surgical procedure, such as removing lymph nodes with cancer treatment, radiation therapy, or trauma to an area, but it can also be hereditary.
Treatment can vary between patients, and your specific needs will be determined after a skilled evaluation by your therapist. Many patients will benefit from lymphatic massage or manual lymphatic drainage, which helps move the fluid in the affected body part. It can also include compression bandages, which help to reduce the size of the limb or body part affected. When the timing is right, you will be measured for compression garments that are specifically fit for you that will help keep the swelling from returning.
Lymphedema therapy is covered by most insurance. Please call Bradley Whiteside Rehabilitation to see if you are covered. If you have any questions, please contact your doctor or call us at (706) 272-6199.
