Decrease Pain & Improve Mobility
What Is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is a skilled technique performed by a certified physical therapist to help decrease pain and improve mobility. The procedure is called dry needling because tiny needles are inserted into the skin, but no liquid or medication is injected. The needles cause a mechanical stimulation of the muscle known as a local twitch response (LTR). This can help relieve pain by reducing the electrical activity and compression.
Indications for Use
Dry needling may be incorporated into a treatment plan for the following, but not limited to:
• Present myofascial trigger points
• Joint and muscle pain
• Range of motion restrictions
• Scar tissue
• Blood flow improvement
• Pain management
• Sports injuries
• Fibromyalgia pain
Plan of Care
Dry needling is not performed as a standalone treatment but as an extension of manual therapy. It should be used in conjunction with manual soft tissue mobilization, therapeutic exercise, neuromuscular re-education, and functional retraining.
