Hamilton Medical Center’s electrophysiology suite utilizes state-of-the-art equipment for 3D l imaging of the heart allowing the physician to direct treatment toward eliminating irregular heart beats.

“Patients suspected of arrhythmias, who have experienced symptoms such as dizziness, heart palpitations, or fainting spells are prime candidates for this procedure,” says Rajiv Verma, MD.

The test involves the insertion of electrode catheters into the heart, typically through the femoral vein. It is performed under fluoroscopy, an x-ray procedure that shows movement of internal organs. The arrhythmia type and site of origin are mapped and treated. Treatments include ablation, which applies a radio frequency wave to the site of the abnormal rhythm, or insertion of a pacemaker or internal cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).

According to Dr. Verma, “EP studies are performed on referral from the patient’s physician, particularly their cardiologist.”

Dr. Verma, who is board certified in Cardiology and Electrophysiology, was trained in Cardiac Electrophysiology at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City under pioneers in the field.
