Orthopedic surgeon Nick Reed, MD, will speak on outpatient total joint replacement during the Hamilton Medical Center Joint Moves event at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 22 at the Murray County Senior Center, 820 G.I. Maddox Parkway in Chatsworth.

The program is free, and light refreshments will be provided.

During the seminar, Reed will discuss the typical causes, symptoms and operative and non-operative treatments for osteoarthritis and pain in the shoulder, knee and hip.

Osteoarthritis is most common in people over 50 years of age, and in people with a family history of arthritis. In osteoarthritis, the articular cartilage that cushions the bones wears away.  Eventually, the bones rub against each other, causing pain and stiffness.

When non-operative treatments offer little relief, and everyday activities are limited due to stiffness and pain, shoulder, knee or hip replacement surgery may be the solution to allow people to keep moving without pain.
